History

The early days of Chatham were much different than they are today. Primarily a wooded area used for hunting and farming on the far outskirts of the city, the neighborhood only began to urbanize once Chicago's immigrant population moved outward. By the time the town was annexed by Chicago in 1889, the great build was on, with a number of Chatham residents coming to help build construction and work in industrial or railroad industries in the neighborhood.

While other South Side neighborhoods struggled with the changing demographics of the 20th century, Chatham did not. Primarily a home for middle-class African American Chicagoans, Chatham has remained one of the more stable South Side communities, which has also been reflected in the home and apartment pricing.

Today, the Chatham rental and apartment market is a prime target for families and residents looking for a safe and affordable community feel on the South Side. Local property management companies are continuing to rehab older apartment options and provide more affordable options in the area. Whether you're looking for housing under 600 dollars, apartments under 800 dollars or apartments under 1000 dollars, you can find a wonderful home in Chatham. Many property management companies still accept Section 8 vouchers or have options for Section 8 housing.
