How to Decorate a Small Space

When you are operating on a small housing budget, particularly in expensive cities, you often have to sacrifice living space. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing though – with a little creativity you can still put together a great apartment that uses every last inch of space.

Have your belongings perform double duty. Whether you have a pull-out couch that allows you to have guests over or you use a futon both to sleep on and relax on, there are a lot of pieces of furniture that can serve two functions. Your TV stand can also store books or you can hang shelves that serve as decoration as well as storage space.

Get creative with storage. Sometimes the greatest challenge of a small living space is the fact that you don’t have much room for your things. This means you’ll have to do two things: 1) sort through your belongings and make sure you’re only moving what you need to your new place (for example, you probably don’t use your CDs or DVDs as much these days) and 2) get organized with storage space. Try looking for ottomans that hold things inside of them or under-bed storage containers that let you keep some clothing under the bed. You’ll have room for everything and a lack of clutter will keep your apartment looking clean and roomier.

Use light colors. Dark colors can make your space look smaller so try to focus on light colors if possible. If you can paint the walls, try a light, neutral shade. If not, you can still use light-colored pieces for things like your bedding, your couch and even the general color of your furniture. Also, if possible, try to make use of any natural light that your place has by keeping blinds open and making sure you don’t have any furniture blocking the windows.
