Parades are one of the highlights of the summer. They bring out friends, families, and neighbors of the community! As members of the community, we look forward to attending and meeting some of our residents!
To celebrate back-to-school, youth and education, we participated in the the 89th Annual Bud Billiken Parade on August 11th and the 12th Annual 8th Ward Parade on September 8th.
The Bud Billiken parade took place on Chicago’s south side near Bronzeville and Washington Park. It is the second largest parade in the nation. This year's parade theme was "Back to School | Back to Work | Back to Life | Back to Bud." During the parade, our Pangeans handed out candy and water bottles! And I must say that our balloon backpacks stole the show! This year’s Grand Marshalls were Deon Cole and Vic Mensa. Throughout the years, many politicians, athletes, entertainers and more have graced the parade such as Barack Obama, Oprah, Spike Lee, Harold Washington, and Muhammad Ali.
The Annual 8th Ward Back-to-School Parade & Jamboree started at 8539 S. Cottage Grove, right outside of 8th Ward Alderman Michelle A. Harris’ office and finished at Jesse Owens Park. This year’s theme was “One Community-One Family & A Celebration of Education.” We passed out koozies, sunglasses and hacky sacks! We even got to hang out with the Alderman Harris for a bit. After the parade, the community gathered at the ‘Jamboree’ for games, free hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and refreshments. Students also received free backpacks filled with school supplies to get them ready for a new year!
We had such a great time at both parades and are excited to participate for years to come!
