Do you wanna know one really easy way to determine whether or not you are truly an adult? When spring time rolls around and your mind immediately jumps to spring cleaning–as opposed to spring break–you have officially entered adulthood. Welcome.
The weather is finally beginning to improve and summer is on the horizon. Now is the time to tackle all of your cleaning and decluttering before summer sets in. If annual spring cleaning is something you typically dread, here are some ways to tackle it once for all and make it fun at the same time.
Let’s get physical
There’s no better way to break a sweat and get that heart rate going than to do some much needed, labor-intensive house cleaning. From scrubbing baseboards to dusting off the ceiling fan, spring cleaning is a great way to burn some calories while tidying up your place. If there was ever a way to kill two birds with one stone, this is definitely it. And turning your spring cleaning into a workout session is also a plus when your New Year’s resolution to hit the gym consistently hasn’t been going so well. Use an activity tracker or pedometer like a FitBit or Apple Watch, or choose from a ton of free or paid smartphone apps to keep track of your steps, movement, and calories shed.
Keep in touch
Another great way to distract yourself while cleaning is to have someone keep you company over the phone while you get your tasks done. We’re all so incredibly busy these days, and we rely on social media probably more than we should. That is exactly why going out of your way to make an old fashioned phone call can really make someone’s day. So, who do you owe a phone call to? An old high school or college pal? Granny? How about a niece or nephew? Catch up on chatting with your loved ones and your spring cleaning chores will surely fly by. No matter who you decide to call, be sure to take advantage of your phone’s hands-free capability. You don’t want to drop that fancy device in a bucket of soapy water!
Entertain or educate yourself
Got no one to call? That’s quite alright. You can still use your phone to help keep your mind off the tasks at hand. Listen to a podcast. Download an audiobook. Listen to an album you haven’t heard in ages. Before you know it, your whole place will be cleaned and you were so engrossed in what you were listening to that you didn’t even realize all the hard work you put in!
Catch up on your binging
Much like listening to music or a podcast, you can also binge watch your favorite television series while you are getting your apartment squeaky clean. If you can still clean and pay attention to the program at the same time, just turn the volume up and get focused on getting your cleaning done. Before you know it, your entire place will be spotless and you will be all caught up on your favorite show. You can even turn it into a game. Try timing yourself every time a commercial break comes and see what you can get clean in the three or four minutes before the show returns from the break. Talk about multitasking!
Treat yourself–and your apartment–to something new
It may sound silly, but investing in a new cleaning tool or two may be the trick that will get you excited about cleaning up. Take inventory of your cleaning supplies and determine what you really need to get the job done. Is it time for a new vacuum cleaner? A fresh mop? How about a really nicely scented all-purpose cleaner that’ll make your apartment smell amazing? Find something new that you know you will use and you might just look forward to spring cleaning for once!
Have you tackled spring cleaning yet? How did it go?
