History of Indianapolis
Selected as the state capitol of Indiana in 1825, Indianapolis was originally home to several Native American tribes before becoming a major railroad hub and transportation center. Its population boomed between 1850 and 1900, when it increased from just over 8,000 to more than 169,000. At the beginning of the 20th century, Indianapolis experienced a great economic boost due to the discovery of the Trenton Gas Field, a natural gas deposit in east-central Indiana, in 1886.
